Dharmesh Shah has a wonderful parable at “onstartups.com” that talks about the importance of providing value, education, and support to customers.  His five tips, in a nutshell:

  1. Make your customers smarter
  2. Focus On Relationships, Not Transactions
  3. Make It Safe and Easy To Leave
  4. Don’t Disparage The Competition
  5. Don’t Judge The Customer

I used to work for a company that is 0/5 on these.  And their stock price has been stagnant for years.
