A Real Woman In A Virtual World — Catherine Winters

You’ll want to listen to the latest interview that I’ve posted, if you’re interested in the phenomenon known as Second Life.

Catherine OmegaI had the opportunity to talk with Catherine Winters (aka Catherine Omega) about the history and future of Second Life — an online immersive environment that claims over seven million accounts. (That equates to about a million active users in a month.) Users create their own identity, build shops, create events, and generally make it all up as they go along.

She talked about the ways large organizations are beginning to work within this community for branding, product marketing and creation of community among their audience:

“If you’re looking to create a Second Life experience for your organization — suppose you have a property such as a television series. You want to be able to allow your viewers to connect via Second Life — to go and meet each other — over the context of the series. They could walk around virtual copies of locations from the show. You could have events where you met a cast member from the show, virtually. You could also have themed events, relevant to your televisions show.

One example of a group that has done this is was Showtime’s “The L Word”, where they virtually recreated locations from the television series and actually integrated it into their online brand on Showtime.com as well as the series itself. They broadcast “come visit us in Second Life” at the end of the show.”

It’s a really interesting interview, with someone who was there at the Big Bang. You can reach her at CatherineOmega.com
